THE RENDON HOTEL

FILM LOCATIONS

The Art At The Rendon: Art Residency provides artists with an inspiring and collaborative environment where they can create and engage with other artists, all while being immersed in the local cultural landscape. In appreciation of the Downtown Los Angeles Arts District’s rich history, we aspire to amplify education and the arts within the community.

While establishing our future permanent studio residency program, which will be housed at The Rendon Hotel, we are currently hosting artists in our office/studio space in DTLA. We aim to cultivate a space that allows creative risk-taking, community building, and growth.

Each residency is distinct, as we encourage artists to explicate their working practice and process so we can best interpret their needs.

JD SMITH

Art At The Rendon hosted Venice Beach, CA-based artist JD Smith at their private pop-up artist residency studio in Los Angeles. This marks Smith’s first art residency in his career. In this video, Smith speaks about his latest series that has been in development during his 8-month residency, where he renders intricately detailed World War II battleships on sheets of paper measuring up to twelve feet in length.

ROMAN KHIMEI & YAREMA MALASHCHUK

Art At The Rendon hosted two Ukranian filmmakers, Roman Khimei and Yarema Malashchuk for 3 months at a private pop-up artist residency studio in the Downtown Los Angeles Arts District. This residency was a part of Kyiv to LA, in collaboration with Marathon Screenings & 18th Street Arts Center. PAST RESIDENCY

BISCO SMITH

Art At The Rendon hosts contemporary artist and DJ Bisco Smith for 6 weeks at their private pop-up artist residency studio in the Downtown Los Angeles Arts District. “This collection of works is a response to the current state of the world both internally and externally. From becoming a parent for the first time to the pandemic, politics, and power, it’s all in the paint. Looking forward to sharing the energy with you all.” – Bisco Smith, 2022

PAST RESIDENCY

SUSAN FELDMAN

Art At The Rendon hosts MOC (My Own City): an installation by artist Susan Feldman of 50 unique buildings that represent a welcoming neighborhood in a utopian city. Created as a site-specific installation, these miniature structures (houses and various community buildings) are created mostly out of found wood with added embellishments to further define what they represent.
